Staffer Who Went On Hateful Rant Still Employed In District 1 Councilman’s Office
An aide to City Councilman Christopher Marte who allegedly fired off a series of sexist rants at a reporter has not been removed from his post.
Steven Wong, Senior Advisor to Councilman Marte, allegedly left a series of four voicemails for reporter Lotus Chau filled with sexist slurs. Chau writes for Chinese-language newspaper Sing Tao Daily.
Marte told constituents in a Community Board 3 meeting that Wong remained employed with his office. While he condemned Wong’s alleged statements, he claimed that the legislative chamber’s general counsel was still conducting an investigation against Wong and that he couldn’t terminate the staffer until the investigation finished.
The only comment Councilman Marte’s office gave at this time was, “We are still looking into these allegations with the Office of the General Counsel and will take appropriate action.”
The reporter could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
