The 25-year-old rapper and media sensation, Polo G, whose real name is Taurus Bartlett, was arrested with gun charges in his hotel room at The Dominick Hotel in SOHO on April 10.
Polo was preparing for the release of his fourth album, “Hood Poet,” that day, when a maid who was cleaning his room located at 246 Spring Street, between Varick Street and 6th Avenue found a black loaded Glock 23 in his hotel room, according to The Post. The gun had a bullet in the chamber and nine bullets in the magazine.
Police responded to a 911 call at 12:09 p.m., the DCPI confirmed, for found property at The Dominick Hotel, and found the gun on a loveseat inside Polo’s room. Polo was then placed into custody at the location without incident, according to a police spokesperson.
Polo was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Possession of a Firearm, according to a police spokesperson.
It’s been a brutal year for Polo so far. He was arrested twice on kidnapping, robbery and assault charges in California last year, according to Rolling Stone, along with his brother, Trench Baby, also known as Taurean Bartlett, arrested in California as well in November last year.
The rapper, originally from Chicago, spent time in that city’s jail selling drugs before he began putting out music. While still in his teens, he landed a record deal amassing a good deal of popularity in the music world. The rapper now has nearly 11 million followers on Instagram and is known for his 2019 debut album “Die a Legend,” which peaked at No. 6 on the US Billboard 200.
Polo G’s attorney Stacey Richman argued the rapper was focused on his rap career in a plea for no bail.
“This man is 100 percent serious in terms of his work, in terms of his professionalism,” Richman was quoted in the NY Post. “He has absolutely no incentive to flee because he has a career he’s built.”
In a bail application, prosecutors said Polo G was a flight risk and brought up prior run-ins with the law, which included a misdemeanor conviction, according to The Post.
Judge Kevin McGrath set a $25,000 cash bail, according to The Post. His next court date is June 4, when he can appear virtually.
No further updates have been made from the DCPI or the Manhattan DA.
